Meelio vs Momentum: an honest comparison from someone who uses both

I keep both installed. Momentum lives on my personal Chrome profile because I’ve used it for years and its daily photo still makes me stop for a second. Meelio is what I built, and it’s what I actually use for a working session where I need a timer, a task list, and something standing between me and Twitter.

That’s the honest starting point: these solve overlapping but not identical problems, and picking one shouldn’t be a brand-loyalty exercise. Here’s where each one actually wins.

The short version

Pick Momentum if you want the most-used, most-polished new-tab dashboard on the market, you like vision boards and AI-assisted writing prompts, and a daily-time-capped free blocker (with unrestricted blocking only on Plus) is good enough for you.

Pick Meelio if you want a working site blocker with no daily cap, notes, and tab stash included free (not teased), you’d rather your data stayed on your device by default, and you want the option to pay once instead of forever.

Neither is right if you need a shared team dashboard — this is a single-user comparison. Both products are built around one browser profile, one person.

What Momentum does better

I’m not going to pretend these are close:

• Scale and trust. Momentum’s Chrome listing shows roughly 2,000,000 users and a 4.5-star average across about 13,800 ratings (checked July 2026). Meelio’s Chrome listing shows 626 users and a 5.0-star average across 5 ratings (checked July 2026) — which is a nice average, but five ratings isn’t a track record, it’s a coin flip. If “lots of other people already trust this” matters to you, Momentum has earned that and Meelio hasn’t yet.
• Visual polish. Momentum’s photo curation, typography, and layout have had years of iteration. It looks expensive. Meelio looks good — I’d say clean and calm rather than lush — but it isn’t chasing the same aesthetic.
• Vision boards. Momentum Plus has a genuine feature here that Meelio doesn’t have at all: a visual board for goals/inspiration images. If that’s a workflow you actually use, Momentum has it and we don’t.
• AI writing tools. Momentum Plus’s AI lineup is an AI-powered notepad (“Notes + AI”) and an idea tool it also calls “Ask AI” (momentumdash.com/plus, checked August 2026). Meelio’s Pro AI feature — confusingly, also named “Ask AI” — is a focus assistant living in the new tab, not a writing tool. Different job, and if you specifically want AI help drafting text, that’s not what ours does.
• Team/business plans. Momentum sells a Team plan today — $3.33 per user/month billed annually with shared goals, team announcements, and a collaborative knowledge base, plus an Enterprise tier with SSO (momentumdash.com/team, checked August 2026). Meelio doesn’t have a team tier at all right now — it’s single-profile, full stop.

What Meelio does better

• The free tier isn’t a demo. Meelio’s site blocker, notes, and native to-do list are fully free and fully functional — no session cap, no daily clock. Momentum’s free tier does include real site blocking (with its own Unstoppable Mode and breathe-before-continue blocked screen — not concepts unique to Meelio), but only inside a Focus Mode capped to a limited time each day; anytime, standalone blocking sits behind Plus.
• Tab stash, capped honestly. Free Meelio gives you one saved tab-stash session — save a messy window, clear it, restore it later. Pro removes the cap entirely. That’s a real limit, not a marketing “unlimited,” and I’d rather tell you the number than round up.
• Local-first by design. Meelio’s core tools — timer, blocker, notes, tasks, breathing exercises — run on-device via local storage and work fully offline. No account is required to use any of them. An account is only needed for cross-device sync, Google Calendar, weather, and third-party integrations.
• A lifetime option, and cheaper recurring pricing. $99 once, or $4/month, or $40/year. Momentum’s annual Plus works out to $39.95/year — $3.33/month, confirmed on Momentum’s own pages (checked August 2026). Its month-to-month price only renders inside the signed-in upgrade flow; third-party sources put it around $4.95–4.99. No lifetime option appears anywhere on Momentum’s own pages.

Pricing side by side

The annual numbers land in roughly the same neighborhood. The real difference is the lifetime option — if you’re confident you’ll want this kind of tool in three years, $99 once beats $40/year by year three.

Privacy and where your data lives

Meelio’s timer, blocker, notes, and tasks store data locally on your device (IndexedDB) and work with no account at all. Signing in only matters for sync, calendar, and integrations — and even then, you’re syncing your own data to your own account, not feeding a recommendation engine. Momentum’s current privacy policy (checked August 2026) names PostHog for analytics, DataDog for monitoring, Stripe for payments, Mailchimp for email, and Azure/OpenAI for AI features; it’s hosted on Microsoft Azure and states user data “isn’t and has never been sold to third parties.” That’s a normal cloud-product vendor list, not something alarming — just a bigger footprint than local-first storage, which is the actual architectural difference here.

Who should actually pick Momentum

You want the dashboard with the biggest community behind it, you like curated daily photography as a small ritual, you’re interested in vision boards or AI writing help, and a daily-time-capped free blocker (unlimited only on Plus) covers what you need from blocking. Momentum is a genuinely good, well-worn product. If polish and scale are what you’re optimizing for, it’s the safer bet.

Who should actually pick Meelio

You’ve been opening a separate blocker extension, a separate notes app, and a separate timer, and you’re tired of that. You want the free tier to actually be usable long-term, not a seven-day taste. You’d rather pay once than forever, or you like knowing your task list works the same with or without wifi. You’re fine being an early adopter of something smaller — Meelio doesn’t have Momentum’s track record yet, and pretending otherwise would be the least honest thing I could put in this post.

Switching without losing your setup

If you’re moving from Momentum to Meelio: your tasks, notes, and blocklist won’t transfer automatically — there’s no import tool between the two products today, and Momentum’s privacy policy offers a data export only on request through support, not as a self-serve feature (checked August 2026). Budget ten minutes to recreate your blocklist and pin your recurring tasks; that’s genuinely all it takes, there’s no deep configuration to rebuild.
