But the category this post is about has a real, honest gap in it, and it’s worth naming plainly: the serious website blockers don’t have a dashboard, and the dashboards don’t have a serious blocker. Dashboards, boxed-in or absent blocking: Momentum and Flocus. Momentum’s blocking is real, not vaporware — but it’s boxed in: free blocking exists only inside a Focus Mode capped to a limited time each day (Momentum’s own 2024 announcement said one complimentary hour daily; no current first-party number is published — checked August 2026), and it has its own Unstoppable Mode and breathe-before-continue blocked screen for that window. How Meelio’s blocker actually works

Worth being specific here rather than just asserting “it’s real”:

• The breathing gate: when you hit a blocked site during an active session, you land on Meelio’s blocked page with a “turn back or continue anyway” choice. “Continue anyway” isn’t a free pass — it starts a short breathing cycle (about ten seconds, one inhale-exhale cycle), and the button that actually lets you through stays disabled until it completes. Get through it and you get 15 minutes on that one site, not a permanent unblock. It’s friction, not a wall — the point is making you pause, not making it impossible.
• Unstoppable mode: an opt-in lock, chosen from preset durations of 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, or 4 hours, during which the toggles that would turn blocking off or loosen it simply don’t respond. Two things worth saying plainly, because overselling this would be dishonest: it survives ending your focus session early, but it does not survive uninstalling the extension or changing browser settings — Meelio’s own settings copy says as much. When you actually need Freedom (or Cold Turkey) instead

Say this plainly rather than softening it: if the thing you need blocked lives on your phone, or in a desktop app that has nothing to do with a browser tab, Meelio doesn’t solve that, and no new-tab extension does. That’s Freedom’s whole category, and its free tier already includes the cross-device reach — you’re not even paying for the part that matters most here. If what you specifically want is the strictest, hardest-to-quit-early lock available and you’re on Windows or Mac, Cold Turkey’s one-time $39 has the stronger reputation for that than Meelio’s Unstoppable mode, which — as noted above — has real seams. Scheduling is the other honest gap: Freedom’s Premium tier and free tools like LeechBlock let you set recurring block windows tied to the clock (block social media 9-to-5, every weekday) — Meelio’s blocker is tied to a manual toggle, a focus session, or an Unstoppable duration you start by hand, not a calendar. If recurring, hands-off scheduling is the actual requirement, Meelio doesn’t have it yet.

Two more worth a mention, both narrower browser-only tools: LeechBlock NG is free, works across Firefox, Chrome, Edge, and other Chromium browsers, and supports genuinely deep scheduling — up to 30 site sets, time-of-day windows, per-hour time allowances, and a password-protected lockdown mode (checked July 2026). If scheduling depth is the one thing you need and you don’t care about a dashboard, it’s a legitimate free option that out-features Meelio on that specific axis. StayFocusd is the other well-known Chrome-only free blocker built around a daily time allowance and a “Nuclear Option” that blocks everything at once and can’t be canceled once activated — still fully free, no paid tier (Chrome Web Store listing, checked August 2026). Neither has a dashboard, tasks, or a timer; they’re pure blockers, same category as Freedom and Cold Turkey, just free and browser-scoped instead of paid and cross-device.
