Meelio vs Momentum and the best Momentum alternatives (2026)

A founder-eye comparison of Meelio and Momentum Dash — where Momentum genuinely wins, where Meelio wins, and who should pick which — plus three other real Momentum alternatives, honestly compared.

I keep both installed. Momentum lives on my personal Chrome profile because I’ve used it for years and its daily photo still makes me stop for a second. Meelio is what I built, and it’s what I actually use for a working session where I need a timer, a task list, and something standing between me and Twitter.

That’s the honest starting point: these solve overlapping but not identical problems, and picking one shouldn’t be a brand-loyalty exercise. The first half of this page is the head-to-head; the second half covers the other real alternatives to Momentum, and where Momentum still beats all of them.

The short version

Pick Momentum if you want the most-used, most-polished new-tab dashboard on the market, you like vision boards and AI-assisted writing prompts, and a daily-time-capped free blocker (with unrestricted blocking only on Plus) is good enough for you.

Pick Meelio if you want a working site blocker with no daily cap, notes, and tab stash included free (not teased), you’d rather your data stayed on your device by default, and you want the option to pay once instead of forever.

Neither is right if you need a shared team dashboard — this is a single-user comparison. Both products are built around one browser profile, one person.

What Momentum does better

I’m not going to pretend these are close:

  • Scale and trust. Momentum’s Chrome listing shows roughly 2,000,000 users and a 4.5-star average across about 13,800 ratings (checked July 2026). Meelio’s Chrome listing shows 626 users and a 5.0-star average across 5 ratings (checked July 2026) — which is a nice average, but five ratings isn’t a track record, it’s a coin flip. If “lots of other people already trust this” matters to you, Momentum has earned that and Meelio hasn’t yet.
  • Visual polish. Momentum’s photo curation, typography, and layout have had years of iteration. It looks expensive. Meelio looks good — I’d say clean and calm rather than lush — but it isn’t chasing the same aesthetic.
  • Vision boards. Momentum Plus has a genuine feature here that Meelio doesn’t have at all: a visual board for goals/inspiration images. If that’s a workflow you actually use, Momentum has it and we don’t.
  • AI writing tools. Momentum Plus’s AI lineup is an AI-powered notepad (“Notes + AI”) and an idea tool it also calls “Ask AI” (momentumdash.com/plus, checked August 2026). Meelio’s Pro AI feature — confusingly, also named “Ask AI” — is a focus assistant living in the new tab, not a writing tool. Different job, and if you specifically want AI help drafting text, that’s not what ours does.
  • Team/business plans. Momentum sells a Team plan today — $3.33 per user/month billed annually with shared goals, team announcements, and a collaborative knowledge base, plus an Enterprise tier with SSO (momentumdash.com/team, checked August 2026). Meelio doesn’t have a team tier at all right now — it’s single-profile, full stop.

What Meelio does better

  • The free tier isn’t a demo. Meelio’s site blocker, notes, and native to-do list are fully free and fully functional — no session cap, no daily clock. Momentum’s free tier does include real site blocking (with its own Unstoppable Mode and breathe-before-continue blocked screen — not concepts unique to Meelio), but only inside a Focus Mode capped to a limited time each day; anytime, standalone blocking sits behind Plus.
  • Tab stash, capped honestly. Free Meelio gives you one saved tab-stash session — save a messy window, clear it, restore it later. Pro removes the cap entirely. That’s a real limit, not a marketing “unlimited,” and I’d rather tell you the number than round up.
  • Local-first by design. Meelio’s core tools — timer, blocker, notes, tasks, breathing exercises — run on-device via local storage and work fully offline. No account is required to use any of them. An account is only needed for cross-device sync, Google Calendar, weather, and third-party integrations.
  • A lifetime option, and cheaper recurring pricing. $99 once, or $4/month, or $40/year. Momentum’s annual Plus works out to $39.95/year — $3.33/month, confirmed on Momentum’s own pages (checked August 2026). Its month-to-month price only renders inside the signed-in upgrade flow; third-party sources put it around $4.95–4.99. No lifetime option appears anywhere on Momentum’s own pages.

Where a cell says “third-party sourced,” I’m choosing not to present it as Momentum’s own number — their month-to-month price only renders inside the signed-in upgrade flow. Check Momentum’s live pricing page before you trust that cell.

The annual numbers land in roughly the same neighborhood. The real difference is the lifetime option — if you’re confident you’ll want this kind of tool in three years, $99 once beats $40/year by year three.

Privacy and where your data lives

Meelio’s timer, blocker, notes, and tasks store data locally on your device (IndexedDB) and work with no account at all. Signing in only matters for sync, calendar, and integrations — and even then, you’re syncing your own data to your own account, not feeding a recommendation engine. Momentum’s current privacy policy (checked August 2026) names PostHog for analytics, DataDog for monitoring, Stripe for payments, Mailchimp for email, and Azure/OpenAI for AI features; it’s hosted on Microsoft Azure and states user data “isn’t and has never been sold to third parties.” That’s a normal cloud-product vendor list, not something alarming — just a bigger footprint than local-first storage, which is the actual architectural difference here.

Who should actually pick Momentum

You want the dashboard with the biggest community behind it, you like curated daily photography as a small ritual, you’re interested in vision boards or AI writing help, and a daily-time-capped free blocker (unlimited only on Plus) covers what you need from blocking. Momentum is a genuinely good, well-worn product. If polish and scale are what you’re optimizing for, it’s the safer bet.

Who should actually pick Meelio

You’ve been opening a separate blocker extension, a separate notes app, and a separate timer, and you’re tired of that. You want the free tier to actually be usable long-term, not a seven-day taste. You’d rather pay once than forever, or you like knowing your task list works the same with or without wifi. You’re fine being an early adopter of something smaller — Meelio doesn’t have Momentum’s track record yet, and pretending otherwise would be the least honest thing I could put in this post.

Other Momentum alternatives

Four tool glyphs in a row over an autumn valley wallpaper, representing the four alternatives to Momentum — illustration

People usually leave Momentum for one of three reasons: the free blocker’s daily cap, the Plus paywall on things like tab management and task-manager integrations, or the aesthetic-first design starting to feel like a distraction rather than a focus tool once you’re trying to actually work instead of admire a sunset photo. None of those are indictments of Momentum — they’re mismatches between what it optimizes for (a beautiful daily ritual, broad appeal, brand scale) and what a specific person needs. Meelio is one answer; here are three others.

What to check before you switch

  1. Does the free tier include the one feature you actually need, or just a taste of it?
  2. Is it an extension (native new tab) or a website you bookmark? Matters for load time and habit — a bookmark is one more click than a new tab.
  3. What does sync cost? Some products charge for syncing your own data across your own devices.
  4. Is there an import path for your existing tasks/blocklist, or are you rebuilding from scratch?
  5. What’s the real ceiling on the free tier, in exact numbers, not marketing language?

Bonjourr — for zero cost, forever

Bonjourr is free and open-source, with roughly 300,000 users and a 4.9-star average across about 23,500 ratings (checked July 2026) — genuinely the privacy/free darling of this category. There’s no paid tier to hit a ceiling on, because there’s no monetization at all. The tradeoff is scope: it’s a minimalist start page — search, shortcuts, weather, a clock, some visual customization — not a task manager, not a blocker, not a Pomodoro timer. It’s the right pick if what you actually wanted from Momentum was just “a nicer new tab,” not a productivity system.

Flocus — for aesthetic-dashboard people who don’t mind web-first

Flocus is a web-first dashboard (with a small companion Chrome extension) built around deep visual customization — themes, ambient sound mixing, custom playlists. Its free tier is tighter than Momentum’s: 3 tasks, a 1-day stats window, and limited theme/sound selection. Plus is $5/month billed annually ($9 month-to-month) or $99 lifetime, unlocking full tasks, full stats history, all themes/sounds, cross-device sync, and a notepad. If your actual complaint about Momentum was “I want it to look more like my aesthetic,” Flocus goes deeper here than Momentum does. If your complaint was “I want a real free task list,” Flocus’s 3-task cap won’t fix that — it’s tighter than Momentum’s, not looser. The Meelio vs Flocus page goes deeper on Flocus.

Freedom — for blocking beyond the browser

Freedom is a different category, worth naming because it directly answers a common reason people leave Momentum: its free blocking is capped to a limited time each day, and Freedom’s isn’t. It isn’t a new-tab dashboard at all — it’s a standalone blocking app that works across your phone, desktop apps, and browsers, not just Chrome tabs. Free tier includes basic blocking and sync; Premium is $8.99/month, $3.33/month billed annually, or $99.50 lifetime, and gates scheduling and a stricter “locked mode” that stops you disabling it mid-session. If the thing you actually need is “stop me from checking Instagram on my phone too,” none of the new-tab-native options here (Meelio included) solve that — Freedom does.

Which one to actually pick

If blocking is the whole problem and it needs to follow you off the browser: Freedom. If you want the prettiest, most proven, biggest-community option and don’t mind the free-tier ceiling: stay on Momentum, or accept it as the tradeoff. If cost is the only axis that matters: Bonjourr. If you want deep visual/sound customization and don’t mind a tighter free task limit: Flocus. If you want the blocker, notes, and PM-tool sync bundled into the new tab itself with a free tier that’s actually usable long-term, and you’re okay being an early adopter of something smaller: Meelio.

Why only four

There are more new-tab extensions out there than these four — you’ll find longer roundups elsewhere that list eight or ten. I kept this list short on purpose: every product above is one I can describe with a fact I’ve actually checked (a Chrome listing, a pricing page, a feature list) rather than a half-remembered impression. If you’ve used something else that solved your specific Momentum complaint — a tab manager, a pure blocker, a minimalist search page — it’s worth including in your own shortlist even if it’s not here. This post is trying to be a reliable subset, not a complete one.

Switching without losing your setup

None of these products have an official import path from Momentum — and Momentum itself provides a data export only on request through support, per its privacy policy (checked August 2026). In practice this means: export or screenshot your Momentum to-do list and blocklist before switching, and budget ten to fifteen minutes to recreate them in whatever you land on. There’s no deep settings migration to worry about — these are shallow enough tools that starting fresh isn’t a big loss.

FAQ

Is Meelio a Momentum clone? No — same category (new-tab productivity dashboard), different bet. Momentum bet on aesthetics and community scale; Meelio bet on bundling a real blocker, PM-tool sync, and local-first storage into the free tier.

Is there a free alternative to Momentum with a site blocker that isn’t capped to part of the day? Meelio’s blocker is free and unlimited, with no daily cap — Momentum’s own free blocking is real (confirmed via its own help center) but confined to a limited time each day inside Focus Mode. Freedom also has a free tier with basic blocking, though it’s a separate app rather than a new-tab replacement.

Is Meelio’s free tier actually usable, or is it a trial? It’s not time-limited. The timer, blocker, notes, and to-do list have no session cap. A few extras (tab stash, custom backgrounds, sound layers, tints, quotes, trackers, link groups) are capped at a small free number and uncapped on Pro — the caps above are the real numbers, not rounded.

Does Meelio sync across devices for free? Yes. You need a signed-in account, but sync itself isn’t part of the paid tier. To be fair, Momentum’s basic sync also works on a free signed-in account (checked August 2026) — sync cost isn’t a real differentiator between these two. The free-tier gaps are elsewhere: blocker caps, notes, and tab stash.

What does Meelio’s Pro actually unlock? Ask AI, advanced weather (hourly forecast, more locations), PM-tool sync (Todoist, Asana, ClickUp, GitHub), and every free-tier cap removed. $4/month, $40/year, or $99 once.

What’s the most similar product to Momentum, just cheaper? None of these are true clones. Bonjourr is closest in “new-tab dashboard” spirit and is free forever, but it doesn’t have Momentum’s task manager or aesthetic depth.

Does switching away from Momentum mean losing my daily photo/quote? Meelio, Flocus, and Bonjourr all have their own background/quote systems, just not the same curated daily-photo pipeline Momentum has built over the years. If that specific ritual is what you love about Momentum, no alternative here replicates it exactly.

Try Meelio for yourself.
